From Apprentice to Artist

Posted in Uncategorized on May 6, 2009 by Craig Trainer

As I have stated before, my favorite tattoo shop is Evolution Tattoo.  So for my last post, I decided to go back and interview Ryan Lebiedzinski about how one becomes a full fledged tattoo artist.

In New Jersey, a tattoo apprentice must log 2,000 shop hours under a certified tattoo artist.  During the 2,000 hours, the apprentice learns all about cleaning and sterilization, two of the most important aspects of being a tattoo artist.  Also, they learn how to run the shop, do taxes,  safety, drawing, stenciling and stencil placement, the tattoo machine and different needles are just some of the other things that apprentices learn.

The 2,000 usually takes a full year for the apprentice to complete.  And to fully remove the apprentice tag, this is what the artist needs to produce to the lisencer: 5 written testimonies from people that they tattooed, 25 photos of work that they have produced to show competency, and to take and complete a course in blood borne pathogens.

I then talked to Ryan about his apprenticeship.  He completed it in 2001 at Got Ink Tattoo in Burlington under Vicki Hunt.  When she would get customers to come in and request custom artwork, she would pass the request on to Ryan.

“Drawing is a huge part about becoming an artist, let alone a tattoo artist, you just have to keep doing it, it’s the only way to get better,” Lebiedzinski said.

To get used to the weight of the tattoo gun, Ryan said that he would place the pencil into the gun and then draw or color his assignments. It wasn’t long into his apprenticeship that he got to tattoo someone, that happened to be himself.

“Two weeks into it, I tattooed myself on the inside of  my left ankle,” Lebiedzinski said.

In the time of him doing his internship, it was custom for apprentices to tattoo themselve.  Mentors said it was important to learn what thet were going to be putting pther people through.

After completing his apprenticeship, Ryan said that in the aspect of actual tattooing, that the process helps very little.

“Every person, every tatoo, everyplace on the body is different, you have to learn by doing.”

During our talk, he explained to me that there are some differences in the way that things are done these days with apprentices.  The way that an apprentice learns comes from the mentor, and in Ryan’s case, he said all he had to really do was draw and do the “bitch work.”  A lot of apprentices now do work on fake skin, instead of themselves.  Every artist has their own way of teaching, their own school of thought and dicipline.  Ryan said that when he was hired at Evolution, it was like he was re-learning from Bill (William Webb, owner of the Evolution shops).

What I found interesting about Ryan, is that he has been on both sides of the spectrum.  He has also been a mentor, and currently two of his apprentices also work at Evolution.  Since Ryan felt that drawing was the most important thing that a student could learn, he had them draw, all the time.  Outside of their 2,000 hours, Ryan demanded them to create and complete 5 drawings.  Not just any type of drawing either, bust drawings that will challenge the apprentice.

“To become a tattoo artist, you have to be dedicated and put in the work, in and out of the shop.”

The End is Here

It’s been fun, but it’s time to shut it down.  There isn’t really much that I can do on a strictly tattoo oriented site.

I’m going to be posting my final project and then that will be it for SJ Skink.

Thank you all for viewing!

Parents Get Something Else to Bitch About.

Posted in Uncategorized on April 23, 2009 by Craig Trainer

Here we go again.  Another round of Angry Parents vs. Tattoos.  This is like a never ending argument, but this time the tattoo industry isn’t at fault.  Mattel has come out with a Barbie that has tattoos.  Like the Pregnant Barbie in 2002, this has, for some stupid reason, cause parents to flip shit yet again.  My 2 cents on this is as follows: get a damn life!  The whole reason that parents are mad is because there’s an accessory that can stamp tattoos on to the kid. What is the difference between that and the press on tattoo that you can get out of the 25 cent machine? Exactly, there is none.

A lot of people have spoken out against the outrage of the parents, most stating that tattoos are a part of the world.  But my favorite response has been this, by Brandon Thompson, “Maybe it’s a sign of the times, every generation is different. Elvis was evil at one time.” You hit the nail on the head there my friend.

This is a video that I found on You Tube about the subject, it’s pretty funny.

So here is a map of just a few tattoo stores in the surrounding area of South Jersey.  Make sure you zoom out on the map to see them all, I don’t know why its all the way zoomed in!

If you have been with me throughout the beginning of this blog, then you know I’m all about making sure you go to the right shop.  The shops highlighted on this map aren’t my recommendations, but are some bigger named shops in the area, so do your research!!

Avenged Sevenfold Tattoos

For anyone who knows the band, knows that they are from SoCal, but since they are my favorite band, I’m gonna talk about them!  The music is sick, and I usually make the artist doing my tattoo play them while I’m in the chair.  I stumbled across this video of the band members showing off their tattoos.

Also, fans of the band have put together a Myspace of fans who have tattoos that relate to the band.  I think it is neat to see the loyalty that the bands fans have!  Make sure to check it out.

Tatted–The Book and Exhibition

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on April 6, 2009 by Craig Trainer

First, let me apologize for forgetting to post last week.  Life as a college student and parent is demanding, and I just forgot, so I am sorry.

So while I was at the Philly convention, my buddy Kimball and I came across a booth for this book called Tatted.  We checked the display out and it sounded cool to us, so we decided to sign the paper and get photographed for the book.  The book gives people a chance to get their body art displayed and gives the person an opportunity to write about their work, or whatever they feel like.  There is a slide show of the Philly convention, which yours truly is in!  I’m not sure, but I think that the people that are on this slide show will not be appearing in the book?  I say that because Kimball did not make the slide show, but the photographer really liked his tattoos.

There is going to be an exhibition of the book when it is completed, roughly scheduled for February 2010, though the book should be out in November ’09.  Having been a part of the experience, I would recommend picking the book up if you want to see some great (and even some not so great) artwork, portrayed on peoples bodies.

Tattoo After Care

Posted in Uncategorized on March 27, 2009 by Craig Trainer

After viewing some of those dumbass tattoos, I figured I’d put it out there how to take care of the tattoos that you normal people get.

Aftercare is pretty simple, but it is very important if you want your tat to look nice.  Here are the instructions that Evoultion Tattoo gives their customers after finishing a tattoo.

Aftercare Instructions

Your Artist took every procedure necessary to make sure your tattoo was applied in a clean and safe manner. The skin was prepped with 70 % ISP Alcohol to kill any bacteria that was present prior to the application of your tattoo and was cleansed multiple times with surgical soap during the tattooing process. Now that your tattoo is complete it is up to you to maintain the cleanliness of your tattoo and keep it free from bacteria that may cause infection. Many people disregard the fact that the tattoo is an open wound, it is a large open wound, not just a nice piece of artwork. Your tattoo as well as any open wound is susceptible to infection. Bacteria lives on every surface, on your skin, in water, even in the air we breathe, so it is extremely important to wash your hand before washing or applying ointment to your tattoo

  • Before tending to your new tattoo, it is very important to always wash your hands.
  • Gently remove the bandage after 1 hour. There may be some ink on the bandage, this is normal. Rinse tattoo with cool water. Using your hand, gently lather with antibacterial liquid soap. Do Not use bar soap as it carries bacteria on its surface. Pat tattoo dry with a paper towel or clean hand towel. Do Not let tattoo air-dry.
  • Using a clean fingertip, gently apply a thin layer of ointment. We do not recommend re-bandaging the tattoo unless you will be in an environment where your tattoo will be exposed to excessive bacteria. Do Not use Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly. There are many products on the market, we recommend using Bacitracin Ointment.
  • Clean the tattoo at least 3 to 5 times a day and reapply ointment until your tattoo is healed. Make sure your tattoo is always moist, never let it dry out. If your tattoo dries out you risk the chance of scabbing, which in turn may cause color loss and/or scarring. If you take care of your tattoo properly, your tattoo will not scab.
  • After a few days to a week your tattoo may start to peel , like sunburn peels, this is normal and at that time you may stop using ointment and start using a moisturizing lotion such as Lubriderm. When you go to bed at night you may loosely wrap your tattoo in saran wrap or a non-stick bandage so that your tattoo does not dry out or get stuck to your bed linens.
  • DO NOT pick or scratch your tattoo.
  • DO NOT apply a lot of ointment.
  • DO NOT go swimming or tanning until your tattoo is fully healed.
  • DO NOT soak your tattoo. Showering is fine.
  • After your tattoo is healed, do not forget to apply sun block every time you go swimming or tanning to prevent fading.

Tattoo Removal

Posted in Uncategorized on March 27, 2009 by Craig Trainer

Do you know somebody who has the name of an ex still tattooed on them? How about someone with just an awful tattoo?  Well, getting tattoos removed is becoming more popular, which is kind of scary if you ask me.  All that means is people wasted money on stupid tattoos, way to go!

Anyway, there are quite a few ways one can go about getting their ink removed, such as;  Laser, Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, Do-It-Yourself Creams, and the classic, painful medical treatments.

Like I said in my first post, knowing what of and where on your body you’re going to put the tattoo the most important step of getting a tattoo.  Removal is an intense process.

As you can see, this tattoo is small, but it still put the patient in plenty of discomfort during the laser removal technique.

A new DYI cream that has been getting a lot of attention lately is Wrecking Balm, which is supposed to remove your skin with out scarring in a few weeks.

In my opinion, I just don’t see the point of spending the money, and sitting through the process of getting tattooed, to spend more money on removal, and endure the same, if not more amounts of pain, unless that cream stuff really works.  There, I have said the important stuff, now join me in making fun of these idiots for having some of the dumbest tattoos, that should be removed haha! (CAUTION, SOME OBSCENE MATERIAL)
